Family Life - Lunar Eclipse

Random

Not So Random

We had the pleasure of watching the lunar eclipse Thursday. I was in the middle of cooking pasta when Father calls to tell us to look outside. We scurry out front and watch for a couple minutes. I took a couple shots with my kodak. Then went in and drained the pasta and set it aside. Grabbed the Nikon and took a few shots. Fiddled with settings, fiddled with lenses, fiddled some more and went back for the Kodak. Every time I use the dang Nikon I tell myself "I need to read the darn manual." Then self forgets of course, until the next time self tries to use the camera again. I am mechanically inclined, yet for some reason this camera and I don't seem to get along. Why is that?

Then for the sake of actually enjoying the lunar eclipse, we slipped out back on the dark patio after dinner and had a great view of the reddish moon. James was very excited to see the lunar eclipse. He gets excited when ever we witness a celestial event. Speaking of which - I introduced him to Star Wars!

Yep. I purchase Star Wars IV the new hope which is the very first star wars to come out back in the 70's. Now I am Darth Vader and get to be killed every night by Luke Skywalker as we battle with our light sabers. The things a mother will do for her child.

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day

Today is a special day where you buy your honey flowers, chocolate, shower him or her with diamonds or spend exorbitant amounts of money in the stores to prove to your love that you love him or her.

Everyday in our household is Valentine's day. Father and I tell each other I love you at least 20 times a day. We can never part without saying I love you. We can never finish a telephone conversation without saying I love you.

I found my soul mate 15 years ago and just hearing I love you, I want you, I need you is enough for me. I don't need fancy jewelry or fancy dinners. Mushy cards and late night dinners are more my style. Father buys the mushiest cards that make me cry and I sometimes do the same to him. We fill our cards with xxxx and oooo's and heartfelt sentiments of life together. Every day is Valentine's Day for us.

Every day James will suddenly express his love in the middle of watching a Godzilla movie or eating his dinner. He even tells me in the middle of the bookstore or while we are standing in line to check out in stores. "Oh, Mom. I love you." Melts my heart every time. Oh son, I love you too! It melts even the hardest of hearts and brings smiles to old curmudgeons faces.

So to all my family, friends, and countrywide - a heartfelt shout out

I LOVE YOU!!!!!

Fun Monday - The one song that is you.

Crown Princess at Ooh, a Shiny Pen is hosting Fun Monday this week

Music plays a vital role in most of our lives. It is everywhere. I want to hear the ONE song that is you. The song that whenever it is heard, you smile. I am not looking for the soundtrack of your life, just that one song. Your friends hear it and think of you. You can post the video, the lyrics, the wav file. However you want to post it is great.”

The first thing I thought when I read this was “no way.” I don’t have a song that is me. I couldn’t think of a single thing. Then for some reason a song from Grease 2 came to mind. I like listening to Grease 2 when I clean the house – love love love “cool rider.” If you have ever watched Grease 2 you’ll know the song I am talking about. Michelle Phillips starts singing up on top of a ladder, doing a sexy dance. I always imagine myself in her place, up there on that ladder, belting out the song. However, when I sing, James covers his ears and runs for the hills.

If you really want to know
What I want in a guy...
Well, I'm lookin' for a dream on a mean machine
With hell in his eyes.
I want a devil in skin tight leather,
And he's gonna be wild as the wind.
And one fine night, I'll be holdin' on tight...

To a coooool rider, a coooool rider.
If he's cool enough,
He can burn me through and through.
Whhoa ohhhh
If it takes forever,
Then I'll wait forever.
No ordinary boy,
No ordinary boy is gonna do.
I want a rider that's cool.

That's the way it's gonna be,
And that's the way that I feel.
I want a whole lot more than the boy next door,
I want hell on wheels.
Just give me a fine motorcycle,
With a man growin' out of the seat.
And move aside, cause I'm gonna ride...

(Chorus)

I don't want no ordinary guys,
Comin' on strong to me.
They don't know what I'm lookin' for,
They don't know what I need.
They're gonna know when he gets here,
Cause the crowd will be shakin'.
I'll do anything to let him know,
That I'm his, his for the takin'.

I want a coooooool rider,
A cool, cool, cool, cool rider.
I want a coooooool rider,
A cool, cool, cool, cool rider.
I want a C-O-O-L R-I-D-E-R.
I need a C-O-O-L R-I-D-E-R.

Yep! That was the first song that came to mind. Why? Don’t ask me. Sometimes even I don’t know where it comes from.

What song makes friends or family think of me? Haven’t the foggiest. Hey mom and dad, siblings, friends, romans, countryman – have an answer??????

I asked Father last night at Dinner "Is there a song you think of when you look at me?" Blank look, hemming and hawing, jokes about three stooges, mothra, etc.

After dirty looks and flinging mashed potatoes with a fork, "Serious answer, please."

"No, I just see you. When I'm listening to music, a song will remind me of you. When I look at you, I'm not thinking of music. (wink wink nudge nudge)

Father and I have a song that is us. Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘The Man I Love.’

Someday he'll come along
The man I love
And he'll be big and strong
The man I love
And when he comes my way
I'll do my best to make him stay

He'll look at me and smile
I'll understand
And in a little while
He'll take my hand
And though it seems absurd
I know we both won't say a word

Maybe I shall meet him Sunday
Maybe Monday, maybe not
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day

He'll build a little home
Just meant for two
From which I'll never roam
Who would, would you?
And so, all else above,
I'm waiting for the man I love

On our eight anniversary, I created a picture with a piano and the words of the song, framed it and gave it to Father. He cried.

I asked James what his song is and he burst into

“I love Godzilla, I love Godzilla, I love Godzilla, I am a Godzilla fannnnnnnnnnn.”

Imagine it in soto voice.

Writer's Island: Prompt - changed

Writers Island

This week’s Writer’s Island prompt is: “Changed”. Just contemplate the word “Changed”, and let your muse take you from there. Surprise, shock, mystify us!

Whatever moves your soul this week is what we all want to read. So, create your poem, prose, short story, essay, commentary, or whatever — and post it on your blog. Feel free to include recordings of you reading your work — and any photo, artwork, or graphic representation you feel is relevant.

I decided to give Writer’s Island a try in order to spark my creativity with writing. Great prompt isn’t it. Changed. What does the word changed bring to mind. Right now, the big change for me is writing. Once I decided to join in nanowrimo and write a novel, life changed. I started getting up at 6:30 and writing (or typing as the case may be). Luna helped. She would jump on the bed around 6:00, pounce on my feet, use the bed for a scratching post or just mew her head off until I got up. And I would write until James got up.

Sometimes it is easier to write things down in longhand rather than the computer because the thoughts won’t flow from my fingers to the keyboard. I did pretty well. I actually wrote a story that had a beginning and an end. The middle left something to be desired, but I had the premise for a story. I accomplished the nano goal of writing more than 50,000 words. So how did that change me?

I wanted to finish the story. Truly finish the story and have a book I could present to folks and say I wrote this. Whether it ever got published or not was another story. Father wants me to finish and try to get it published and even if I get reject letters, I would have written a book.

Changed. Luna now sleeps with James and doesn’t wake me up anymore. James does around 7:30. James loves to get on the internet after breakfast and finds the most annoying websites, whether on purpose or not, I don’t know. Godzilla clips of monsters screeching and roaring, the bleating of shaun the sheep and other amazing silly shows. My quiet time in the morning disappeared. I have a huge stack of books by my bedside and Nora Roberts and Terri Blackstock are calling my name. Instead of writing, I read and read and read. Suddenly, my morning is gone, Father is up and off for work, it’s time to do lessons, clean the house, do laundry, work on my homework and…..

They say the more you read the better you write. I discovered the more I read, the less I write. During nano, I hardly read at all and I wrote 2000 words a day. Life after nano, I am barely writing 100 words a day. There are days I manage to edit and rewrite scenes and then days I accomplish nothing. Father made the comment last night (and I had not discussed this with him) that the more I read the less I write. I have to admit, he is right. Add the distraction of James and poof. It’s gone.

Changed. I’ve discovered something new and I want to pursue it. It was quiet yesterday afternoon at the shop (my turn to work). My technician engrossed in repairs, no customers coming in and the phones were quiet for a change. I grabbed some paper and began to write down ideas for a new beginning for my story. I also decided James won’t be getting on the internet until a certain time, so I have the quiet time I need in the morning to write.

Changed: For lent, decided to start getting up at 6:30 again. I wake up at 6:30, look at the clock and think ‘I’ll get up in a minute.’ The next glance at the clock shows that minute turned into 45 minutes and James is walking in the door saying ‘good morning.’ Arrg. Tomorrow is another day and I will try again.

Changed: Me, Father, James. Life is all about changes and wanting change, looking for change. Good change. Change is watching your son learn something new and the light in his eyes gets brighter. He is changed. Change is listening to Father describe a new design he has come up with and actually implementing it. He is changed.

Change is Life. Life is changed. We are transformed.

Valentine from Hootin Annie

Wow! Look what I got today.

Aw, how sweet. My very first valentine and it's from Anni at Hootin' Anni's . She is so wise and wonderful and it is always an experience to visit her website. Thank you, Anni.

Wordless Wednesday --- NOT!

James and Mom to the rescue!

Lovely Luna

Poor little birdy

I was peacefully sleeping in James' bed this morning... Why? Well, he had a bad dream in the middle of the night and crawled into bed with us. I can't sleep with two hot bodies so moved to his bed. Any who, James comes in to tell me Luna has caught a bird's egg. I jump out of bed and see Luna on the patio chewing on something. At first glance it looks like an egg which she has broken open. Out the door I go to save whatever it is. She had her mouth wrapped around the little fella above. I chased Luna around the patio, caught her and made her drop the bird. I scooped up the poor thing and took her inside. James and I had the experience of getting up close and personal with the bird and checked her out thoroughly. Stunned and breathing.

You could tell the minute she came out of it.... Her eyes darkened and she looked at me
and chirped, her claws grasped my finger. I get the bright idea -- let's go show dad before we let her go. As soon as we got into the bedroom, she starts to try to fly and chirps at me. She did actually take flight for 10 seconds and landed back on my sweater. We took her outside and she took off over the fence for freedom. YEAH!!!!!

Presidential Election

VOTE!!!!!!!

Father and I will be voting today for Mike Huckabee. Check out the link to find out his view on the issues. I decided months ago to throw my hat in his corner and after some contemplation and regurgitation, Father decided to do the same.

Frankly, none of the candidates float my boat, but Mike comes closest even though Father says his name reminds him of Huckleberry hound and keeps calling him President Huckleberry.

I am proud of Huckabee for keeping it clean and not resorting to mud slinging and lamb basting the other candidates.

Several people told me they were concerned about his view on immigration and having open boarders which surprised the heck out of me. So for your amusement, here are his views straight from the horses mouth regarding that issue.

Governor Huckabee believes:
  • Securing our borders must be our top priority and has reached the level of a national emergency.
  • I support the $3 billion the Senate has voted for border security. This money will train and deploy 23,000 more agents, add four drone planes, build 700 miles of fence and 300 miles of vehicle barriers, and put up 105 radar and camera towers. This money will turn "catch and release" into "catch and detain" of those entering illegally, and crack down on those who overstay their visas.
  • In this age of terror, immigration is not only an economic issue, but also a national security issue. Those caught trying to enter illegally must be detained, processed, and deported. As Governor, I ordered my state troopers to work with the Department of Homeland Security to arrest illegals and enforce federal immigration law.
  • I oppose and will never allow amnesty. I opposed the amnesty President Bush and Senator McCain tried to ram through Congress this summer, and opposed the misnamed DREAM Act, which would have put us on the slippery slope to amnesty for all.
  • I oppose and will not tolerate sanctuaries for illegals. The federal government must crack down on rogue cities that willfully undermine our economy and national security.
  • I oppose giving driver's licenses to illegals and supports legislation to prevent states from doing so. In 2005, I signed legislation that prevents illegals in Arkansas from getting driver's licenses.
  • I will stop punishing cities which try to enforce our laws and protect the economic well-being, physical safety, and quality of life of their citizens.
  • I oppose and will not tolerate employers who hire illegals. They must be punished with fines and penalties so large that they will see it is not worth the risk.
  • I oppose the economic integration of North America that would create open borders among the United States, Canada, and Mexico. I will never yield one iota or one inch of our sovereignty.
  • I will take our country back for those who belong here. No open borders, no amnesty, no sanctuary, no false Social Security numbers, no driver's licenses for illegals.
I know that securing our borders must be our top priority and has reached the level of a national emergency. I am as sick and tired as you are that it is harder for us to get on an airplane in our home town than it is for all these illegals to cross our international border unchallenged.
We cannot stem the tide of illegals until we turn the tide. Before you fix the damage to your house caused by a leaking roof, you have to stop the leak, which I am determined to do.

To find out more about Huckabee, visit his website.

So, get out there and vote people. Doesn't matter who you vote for, as long as you vote. Otherwise, you won't have the right to complain about who gets elected.

Fun Monday - Bucket List

Tiggerlane is hosting fun monday this week and she wants us to do a bucket list.

"Have you heard of The Bucket List? Well, that's what I want from you! Make a list of things you want to do before you die. It must be at least five items - and you can make it as long as you desire. Photos are optional. And let's hear about some of the wackiest, most bizarre to-do's on your Bucket List!"

My bucket list of things I want to do before I die which will be in about 50 or more years, give or take a few. I plan to grow old gracefully with Father and bounce many grandbabies on my knee. James has already advised me he wants to have 10 kids and share his Godzilla movies with them.

1) Wine tour of France - we want to spend at least a month in France and tour the wineries. Father introduced me to Bordeaux wine and I have been spoiled ever since. California wine gives me a headache and makes my nose all stuffy.

2) Along with the wine tour, I also want to go on the orient express

3) Heck - how about we just go to Europe and rent a castle and stay there until we get tired of the place. Sounds good to me.

4) I have always wanted my own bookstore. Way back in the 80's before Borders, I came up with a business plan for a bookstore/coffee house. A place where people come to browse the books while enjoying a cup of gourmet coffee. I think they stole my idea. So, the plan is to open when Father retires.

5) Did I mention bouncing grandbabies on my knees?

6) Find that perfect house on the beach where I can sit and watch beautiful sunsets every night and listen to the crash of the surf on the shore.

7) New dream that started in November with nanowrimo - I want to be a writer and write books. Working on my first book now.

As for the rest, no crazy dreams like running with the bulls or climbing mount everest. Just simple things such as enjoying each and every day with the ones I love and appreciating what they bring to my life.

Family and Writing Life: Meme - Eight Things about MOI!

Do you ever get so busy or your brain so full of other stuff that unless you write a list of things to do, you forget. I seem to have that tendency these days. Then your lists get so long, you just look at it and decide to read a book instead. Lisa of Koinonia Academy tagged me back in November while I was in the middle of nanowrimo and it completely slipped my mind.

And for the first time in my life, I decided to send some family members Christmas presents after Christmas. And I forgot. Then remembered. Then forgot again. Fortunately said family members aren’t too shy about asking if the packages got lost in the mail and with much chagrin, I remembered what I had forgotten. Do you start losing your mind, the closer you get to 50? Maybe I’ll just start writing lists of 5 things I need to do and once those are done, then we’ll go with another 5. Things may just get done that way.

Okay – on with the show. My list of 8 things (without or without qualification depending on my mood. If you want qualification, just ask)

Eight things I’m passionate about:

Father
James
Luna
Freedom
Books and Reading
Learning
Home schooling
God

Eight things I want to do before I die

Tour the entire united states
Spend at least a month in Bordeaux, France
Spend a month in Japan
See James get married and bounce grandbabies on my knee
Open my bookstore (when father is ready to retire, then its my turn)
Take a trip on the orient express
Become proficient in a foreign language
Find that perfect beach house

Eight things I say often

In a minute.
What did I say?
Did I say you could do that?
Go ask your father.
Say that again?
Did you look in the …… (in response to mom, where is it?)
I love you
Is that an approved website?

Eight Books I’ve read recently

Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott (instructions on writing and life)
Streetcar named desire (for my film and lit class)
McCade brothers by Nora Roberts (I’m on a nora Roberts kick right now)
On Writing by Steven King
The Phoenix Enchanted by Mercedes Lackey (xmas gift from father who swears it will help me write my book. Unfortunately, It’s just one of those books that for some reason, you read halfway and lose interest. I’m still working on it and he bugs me daily about finishing it.)
The Chesapeake Bay Saga (Quinn Brothers) Yes. Another Nora Roberts
Character and Viewpoint by Orson Scott Card
The Celestine Prophecy

Eight things I’ve learned this year (since we are only in the 2nd month of 2008, we’ll go with 2007)

Writing is fun and easy
Writing is frustrating and hard
Writing is letting it flow and just getting it down on paper
Writing is a winding road to enjoy and not worry about the destination.
I enjoy getting up earlier than everyone else does and having quiet time in the morning.
TV has turned into a vast wasteland.
I can get A’s – I’m smarter than I thunk.
Enjoy the moment.
