Book Through Thursday - Best Book Never Read

Booking Through Thursday is about

"The Best Book You Never Read"

"We’ve all seen the lists, we’ve all thought, “I should really read that someday,” but for all of us, there are still books on “The List” that we haven’t actually gotten around to reading. Even though we know they’re fabulous. Even though we know that we’ll like them. Or that we’ll learn from them. Or just that they’re supposed to be worthy. We just … haven’t gotten around to them yet.

What’s the best book that YOU haven’t read yet?"

I just finished perusing our shelves to see what books we have that are on the list and found a number of books I haven't read yet. Classics we have collected over the years from library sales, antique store book finds, and family members. I really have no excuse for not reading them, since I do dust them off every so often and look through them, thinking about the stories. So I will make a plan to do so. Soon... I promise, I really will!

Just a few of the books on the shelves:

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. This one is going to be first on the list and first read for Callipidder Day's Spring Reading Challenge.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I do have an anthology of Jane Austen stories which also includes Persuasion, Emma and Northanger Abbey

The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins,

The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky

The Old Man and The Sea and For Whom The Bell Tolls by Ernest Heminway.

Les Miserables by Victor Hugo.

What "best" books do you have gathering dust on the shelves that are calling your name?

  1. Great list!
I want to read War and Peace too but I guess I'm intimidated by the volume! LOL.

  8. P&P is one of my top all-time favorites!

The Heminway books are short, you could read them quickly.

The others are heavier, but well worth it.

  9. Other than P. and P. I haven't read any of those either.

  10. That's what I have been doing the last 2-3 years -- taking one classic at a time and working my way through them. It's been a pleasant journey!

I'm working ym way through 1,400+ pages of the unabridged Les Miserbales, and I'd definitely advise getting the shorter abridged version. :-)

  11. Just about everything you have on your TBR list is on mine too, except for two:
"The Old Man and the Sea" which I didn't like at all.
    and
"Pride and Prejudice" which I'm working my way through as we speak. Finally. :)

  12. Ah, Pride and Prejudice! I read it once in high school, and I've since tried to re-read the entire story... but I've failed!

Russian authors completely intimidate me. Dostoevsky makes my eyeballs hurt just thinking about it! I know that's pretty prejudiced of me, but I can't help it! :)

I'm determined to soon read Little Women. In fact, I'm going to make that my next goal!

  13. Hi!
That's a great list of books. I started War and Peace a few years ago and but it down. Haven't picked it up again. Maybe I'll give it another try! Have a great day!!

  14. Oh I completely forgot to put The Idiot on my list. It's interesting your list is a group of classics and I had two classics on my should read too.

  15. That's an extremely ambitious list!

  16. Just finished Les Miserables abridged version, did not like it. The unabridged was much better, just skip the sewer and Waterloo parts! P & P is one of my all time favorite books.

  17. Good list! Some of them are on my mental Read Someday list.

  18. I read War and Peace, The Old Man and the Sea, For Whom the Bell Tolls and Pride and Prejudice in high school, and recently reread P&P.

I have vague memories of all but P&P (not just because I'd reread it, but because I thoroughly enjoyed it).

As to which books are calling my name... *sigh* all of them do! That's why I have to run fast past the thrift shops and booksales!

  19. I myself would love to read the Old Man And The Sea, I saw the movie a long time ago.

  20. I've got so many but when I reflect upon the type of writing style that appeals me the most, I narrow it down to a short list.

At first I couldn't make of the question because it really depends on what best is. I'm reading a very popular book that I'm probably the last person on earth to read it. Gone with the Wind. :)

Les Miserables is up for my next Read Along with Me, which is scheduled for June.

  21. Pride and Prejudice is on my BTT as well.

I'm impressed by your list. War and Peace is too intimidating for me. I'm glad I didn't have to read it in school! I don't think I'll ever get around to reading it, unfortunately.

  22. Pride and Prejudice is one of those books for me too...I think I would like it but I'm afraid to read it in case I don't!

  23. Thanks for your comment on my BTT post... I'd definitely like to tackle War and Peace one day, and maybe Pride and Prejudice. But, like a lot of other people's posts I read this week, I feel like I'll never be able to tackle every book that I want to read!

  24. I've never heard of the moonstone. I managed to finish War and Peace but not Pride and Prejudice. I can remember reading the two brothers but not the idiot. Hemingway we did in school so I did not enjoy it at all :( Does it count if I've seen the play many times -- Les Miserables?

After visiting a few of you folks, I can see the my TBR list is just going to keep on growing!
