Booking Through Thursday - Niche Book

Today's Booking Through Thursday is all about Niche books:

There are certain types of books that I more or less assume all readers read. (Novels, for example.)

But then there are books that only YOU read. Instructional manuals for fly-fishing. How-to books for spinning yarn. How to cook the perfect souffle. Rebuilding car engines in three easy steps. Dog training for dummies. Rewiring your house without electrocuting yourself. Tips on how to build a NASCAR course in your backyard. Stuff like that.

What niche books do YOU read?

My two primary passions these days are writing and of course, homeschooling. I have one shelf of books just about writing, plus loving reading Writer's Digest and Writing Magazine.

I would love to be published some day and have two WIP's (works in progress), one of which I am currently on the 2nd draft and almost completely rewriting. My very first Nano story and attempt at serious writing. It needs a lot of work, while the other stews on the shelf for a while.

My other passion is homeschooling. I have many books on learning styles, teaching, character, curriculum, the trivium....etc. etc. etc. (imagining the voice of king -Yul Brynner from the King and I). Homeschooling has been a learning experience, not only for James, but for me as well.

I go through phases as well (such as gardening, learning a new language, etc) and when I do, look out. The shelves will fill up with whatever phase I'm going through. I'm a book hog. :)

What is your specialty these days?

  2. I have a collection of writing books like that too. I don't think i would cope as a homeschooler. I am a primary school teacher who copes better with thirty children belonging to someone else than I do with my twin girls.

  3. This was an interesting topic today. I love reading your posts about your writing and home schooling. For a while I was checking out books about knitting...hasn't helped...still can't knit!

  4. I have a few writing books, but usually I just muddle along on my own. Homeschooling, though--wow! That's a challenge. I didn't even know there were that many books to help with it.

  10. Methinks I should nose through your niche books if I can. ^-~ They're niches I'm interested in. (Not so much the homeschooling as such - I think that might be illegal here - but they might yield some pretty good books all the same.)

My latest niche book to squee over is called Teaching Tenses. It's... about teaching tenses unsurprisingly. ^-^ I've only leafed through it so far, though. It's one of those 'dip in as needed/wanted' books, but it looks like just what I was looking for. (I've a part-time job as quizzer/tutor and tenses are the things that are nightmares to get into people's heads.)
