Booking through Thursday - Numbers Game

Today's Booking through Thursday is a blast from the past.

For something different, I’m borrowing a question from … here! One of the very first questions ever at Booking Through Thursday. Back from 2005 when Laura owned the blog but, because it was so new, it didn’t get as many responses as it does now … so, why not revisit?

Here’s the question:

Some people read one book at a time. Some people have a number of them on the go at any given time, perhaps a reading in bed book, a breakfast table book, a bathroom book, and so on, which leads me to…

Are you currently reading more than one book?

If so, how many books are you currently reading?

Is this normal for you?

Where do you keep your current reads?

I'm a one book woman and yes, it is normal for me. I only read one book at a time, giving my undivided attention to the story. Since I'm a very visual person and have a tendency to see the story as it flows along, I can only read one book at a time. If I try to read more than one book at a time, the stories blend together and the movie in my brain becomes confusing.

I've experimented and had the bathroom book, the purse book, the whatever place book. Just doesn't work for me. So now the magazines - Bookmarks, Edutopia, Writer and Writers Digest reside in the bathroom for easy reading. The rest of the books reside next to my bed on the nightstand waiting patiently while I'm involved with my current read. I'm a fast reader (most of the time) so they don't have too long to wait.

How about you? How many can you handle at one time?

  2. I did a post on this, too, awhile. I'm definitely a slow reader who can only do one book at a time. :D

  3. I usually read the one book that I carry with me (in the bag) everywhere I go. When I read Gone with the Wind, I left it at home and brought a second book with me to work.

  5. Oh, I'm afraid to count. I am currently reading five or six, depends on if you count the much neglected one at the bottom of the pile.

Granted two of those are school related.

I'm terrible about having too many going at once. I do try to balance. Two are books on writing, one is The Iliad, which I am absorbing slowly, and the fourth is on being creative.

  8. I am often reading more than one book at once, but I often vary it and have one fiction, one non-fiction.

  9. I like the variety of more than one book but how great it is that all of us readers are different.

  10. I've been experimenting with listening to one and reading another. It kind of works!

  11. I did a silly, silly thing yesterday and counted the number of books I'm reading now. How many? Ten. My mind is funny in that I can focus better on what I'm reading if I have other books going at the same time. I must have a book for every mood.

Normally, I read five to six at once. Ten is nowhere near normal.

  12. I'm amazed at all the people who can multitask several books. I'm quite adept at multitasking everything else, however.

It would be interesting to see if my reading one book at a time, usually one a day versus those of you who read several at a time, if we all end up reading about the same amount of books.

Just like the driver who goes 55 versus the one going 65, but they both end up at the same place within 5 minutes of each other.

    Food for thought.
