What's On Your Nightstand

It is the last Tuesday of December and Jennifer at 5 Minutes for Books asks "What's On Your Nightstand?"

"It's almost 2009, and here's a chance to think about what you might be reading as the calendar flips over. I know that I have a lot more reading time this month — between driving to Virginia for Christmas (my husband drives; I read), and slower school/activity schedules with the break, not to mention snowy days that keep me homebound!

So, what about you? What are you reading this month? Perhaps you are hoping for a certain book under the tree that you know you'll dig right into. Or you have books that you haven't been able to get to because of the busyness of the season. Let us know."

I have so many books on my nightstand calling my name right now that I'm not quite sure were to start. Plus several wrapped books were put under the tree last night by Father and James and my mouth is watering in anticipation. A couple are so huge, maybe I should be worried instead. :)

The ones I am going to concentrate on for the rest of the month are

Unseen by T.L. Hines - I received this one from Thomas Nelson publishers as part of the book bloggers review program. Once I read an excerpt of the book, I was hooked. It's a christian thriller novel about a loner who watches people and then the tables are turned on him and suddenly he's the one being watched.

Hercules Poirot Christmas by Agatha Christie A cozy Christmas mystery is a must.

Wicked by Gregory Maguire I can't wait to sink my teeth into this fractured fairy tale about Elphaba, the wicked witch of the west from Oz.

Salvation in Death by J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts) This is the 27th crime thriller featuring homicide Lt. Eve Dallas. This time Eve is investigating the death of a catholic priest who drinks wine laced with cyanide during a funeral

There are 9 days left in the month, so that's all I'm considering for now. The rest can wait for 2009 and all those challenges I'm involved in. Father and I were discussing books the other night and he posed a hypothetical question after realizing all the books sitting on my nightstand had not been read yet.

"If we had to impose a book buy moratorium, how long would those books last? Would they last 6 months and could you go six months without buying books?"

Gulp! I looked at the books, I looked at him. I looked at the books again. Hmmm!

I have approximately 40 to 50 books sitting on, around, or in the nightstand. I looked at those books and thought. At the rate of 2 to 3 books a week, they would last me 3 to 4 months. Nope, wouldn't last me six months.

Could I go six months without buying a book? Not possible. The longest I have lasted without buying a book is 3 weeks. If it was a matter of money, then yes I would have the will power not to buy books. But it isn't. And the question was only hypothetical. Thank God.

  3. TOTALLY identify with your conversation about book buying. ;D Glad to know I'm not alone in that department.

I can't really decide what to do in 2009 either. I think I'm just gonna have fun and do a lot of re-reading old favorites. We'll see.

Thanks for sharing. Your Nightstand books look fun!

    Merry Christmas!

  4. A few years ago, my hubby asked me to stop buying books to help get our debt down and they lasted me more than 6 months. Now I am hooked on the library and only buy books I really, really want to own! I am a bit envious you have Salvation in Death. I am waiting for it and love this series.

  5. During those first married and baby years I went ages without buying a single new book (we're talking at least 4 years). All I can say is thank goodness for inter-library loan (and used books sales). My librarians still know me very well even though I am once again buying new books.

  6. I'm part of Thomas Nelson's blog reviewers as well. I wondered if Unseen was any good. I love all these mysteries you have, and after seeing Wicked on Broadway I totally want to read the book!
